Gov. Tambuwal Distributes Anti-Malaria Commodities....

Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State on Monday inaugurated the mass distribution of multi billion Naira anti malarial and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) drugs as well as Insecticidal Treated Nets.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the distribution ceremony was organised to mark the 2016 World Malaria Day with a theme: “End Malaria for Good: The Time is Now”.

Tambuwal said that part of the drugs were the N 3.1 billion assorted NTDs drugs donated to the state government by Sight Savers International.
They include Zithromax tablets, Tetracycline and Paediatrics Oral Suspension, among others.
The governor stated that the drugs will be distributed to 12 trachoma endemic local government areas in the state.
The benefitting areas Isa, Sabon Birni, Rabah, Goronyo, Illela, Bodinga, Binji, Silame, Wamakko, Gada and Tangaza.
Tambuwal further said that the other drugs included assorted anti malarial drugs and millions of insecticide treated nets.
The governor called for improved investments in the treatment of NTDs and malaria by states in the country.
Tambuwal also promised to immediately release the state’s counterpart funding for the NTDs control programme.
“It is regrettable that malaria accounts for the 40 per cent of the estimated global malaria deaths.
“The state government will sustain its rural medicare programme with the distribution of free drugs to pregnant women and children under five,” Tambuwal promised.
The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, lamented that Nigeria loses 150,000 persons to malaria annually.
Adewole noted that “this is happening although the federal government had distributed 95 million nets in the last three years’’.
The minister commended Tambuwal’s astute leadership qualities which had propelled the state to greater heights.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, represented by the Magajin Rafin Sokoto, Alhaji Rilwanu Bello, stressed the need for more efforts to curb the menace of malaria in the country.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Balarabe Kakale, and the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Umar Attahiru, commended Tambuwal for according the health sector priority attention.
